“The Recreational Activities Were a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity”

Teide ERASMUS+

Group of basketball

A group of basketball players visited the island to learn Spanish and provide tutelage to the local children during their summer camp. Chloe, Estella, Layla, Heavenly, Lewis and Bruce are athletes of Bristol Academy of Sport and arrived in Tenerife on the 20th of June to get started with a Spanish language course. During the course, which comprised of twenty classes, the athletes learned Spanish terms for the different parts of the body, the specific terms used in basketball and also the most common words used in everyday life.

“I really enjoyed learning Spanish at FU International Academy because it helped me to feel more confident when communicating with local people and it also prepared me for coaching the children too,” commented Estella, after completing the language preparation. “The teachers at FUIA are very friendly and helped me to develop my language skills which will now enable me to coach kids in basketball move effectively,” told us Chloe.

Free time activities

During this week, the athletes took part in leisure time activities organized by FU International Academy, such as dance classes, surf trial and volleyball. These activities provided the athletes with a really good opportunity to get to know the local culture better and also to put their new language skills into practice. “The FU is great, the teachers are very friendly, but most importantly, the recreational activities were a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially surfing.”, said Bruce.

Amazing volcano

Others were more impressed with the amazing volcano that could be found on the island: “I really enjoyed the Teide walk. It was beautiful and informative.”, said Layla. The participants also visited the two world-famous attractions of the Canaries: Loro Parque, known from its parrot collection, and Siam Park, the water paradise with the biggest artificial waves in the world.

Teide walk

In the second week, the basketball players worked with local children in a summer camp at Parque Vacacional Eden where they had the opportunity to not only practice their coaching skills, but also to see how the local trainers are working with the children. Lewis was really satisfied with the results: “I enjoyed coaching the kids as it allowed me to get to know them and, at the end of the week, I was also able to speak better Spanish.”

We will be happy to welcome more athletes from the Bristol Academy of Sport to Tenerife. It is always a pleasure to work with young professionals who are eager to learn and help the local community.
