“It Was Fun and Challenging” – Our German Students Said Goodbye to the Island

Students-discovering-Tenerife

Thanks to an Erasmus+ project

One month ago, four young German apprentices came to Tenerife to gain real work experience and to get to know the Spanish culture. They were students of Hermann-Gmeiner vocational college and are enrolled in social studies and health care classes there. Thanks to an Erasmus+ project organised by their school, they came to Tenerife to put learned theory into practice. Their internship programme included a one week intensive of basic Spanish lessons at FU International Academy as well as a four-week internship placement activity in different companies located along the North of the island.

German interns on the island

Practice in social centers

Dominic and Moritz had practice in social centers, where they experienced what working with disadvantaged people was all about. Marina was working with young children in the German College of Puerto de la Cruz, and she shared the following thoughts about her time on Tenerife:

“This was my first time on the island and also the first time that I’ve left my country for a prolonged period. I really enjoyed the hours spent in the school, where I worked mostly with Spanish kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. They had a really good level of German. My tutor was absolutely helpful as well and I had a nice colleague from Colon. I felt lucky to have these people around me.”

Social workers on the island

Nicola got comfortable in his internship environment quickly and would have enjoyed spending more time on the island: “I have nothing to complain about. I had fun during the work and in my free time as well. It was the first time that I had to function on my own by buying and preparing the food, doing the laundry, living with young people, and so on. It was fun but challenging at the same time.”

Our enthusiastic helpers left the island this weekend, and they will now go back to the classes to prepare for their upcoming exam session. We hope that they all learned helpful principles during their time in Tenerife and we wish them good luck as they continue to develop their careers.
