PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Another Year and Another Experience for the Golfers of Bristol Academy of Sports

Golfers-on-Tenerife

British Academy

This is the fourth time that young, professional golfers are visiting Tenerife to work, play golf and learn in the sun. The cooperation projects between the British Academy and the FU International Academy Tenerife are financed by Erasmus+ funds and gives athletes the opportunity to gain valuable work experience abroad. As we did last year, this year we welcomed not only golfers, but also boxers, basketball players and fencing players.

The 5 golf apprentices, together with their coach, Kelvin, arrived at the end of March. They spent the first week of their stay in the north of the island, taking part in our Spanish classes and various leisure time activities. Later, they moved to the more touristic location of Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife. This is where they started practicing on different golf courses. The south is a perfect place for the students, since there is sun all year around, there are excellent golf clubs and there are tourists with different knowledge of this sport, starting from beginners to professional players.

Work placement in the South of Tenerife

Attractions of the island

During their first week of internship, the guys were working at the golf resort of the five star Hotel Abama. Every day they assisted the greenkeeper and the caddy master in their working routines. They also met with the Director of the club, Victor Sáez, and had the opportunity to speak with him about their views on the sport of golf and improvement opportunities. Of course, playing in the afternoon was the most pleasant part, despite the fact that the golf course can be quite tricky due to its rugged terrain.

In the following weeks, they were split up in two groups as they worked in different golf centers – the Golf de Sur and Golf Las Américas. Internships are not only the result of hard work however. With Loro Park and the volcano Teide, the English boys already saw two of the most favored attractions of the island. Now, while in the south, they will be able to see Siam Park and enjoy a whale watching tour in the Atlantic Ocean.

By looking at the first pictures, you can easily understand why they chose this golfing lifestyle. One can never get enough of the wonderful views on the course. We will come back soon to provide details about their last weeks on the island.
