Internships Rule! A Big Kickoff for Our German Interns in Their Placement Companies

FU International Academy

At the beginning of March four curious German teenagers arrived on the island. They were willing to face the challenge of moving to another country to practice their professions, even though they don’t speak the local language. New faces, new culture, new routine – a big adventure for them to take on. But they are not the only ones. FU International Academy welcomes hundreds of students every year to Tenerife, helping them develop their careers and experience the Canarian lifestyle.

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of internships and part-time jobs in foreign countries, which is a win-win situation for both the companies and the applicants. Mobility programmes in the frame of Erasmus+ are receiving more attention. This is understandable, as work placements enable the participant to have a look at the desired workplace without any commitment. Learned theory can be put into practice so the internships create a learning environment not only for the candidates, but for the company as well.

Our German participants take part in one of these Erasmus+ mobility projects. They are students from the Hermann-Gmeiner-Berufskolleg, a vocational school in Moers, Germany. They came to Tenerife to complete their five-week internships in social work. Before starting  their new work placements, the pupils took a one-week language course to learn basic Spanish knowledge in addition to participating in the leisure activities organized by our school.

Puerto de la Cruz

This week the apprentices started work in different placements: Marina, the only girl in this group, already began her internship last week at the German college of Puerto de la Cruz. The three boys – Dominik, Nikola and Moritz- kicked off this Monday. They are working at Cruz Roja Española, Terraza del Bótanico and Proyecto Elemento, helping children with disabilities and practicing their professional specialties in a real work environment.

This is not the first time they have taken part in traineeship activities. Before their stay in Tenerife, they worked in kindergartens, youth centers and restaurants. But of course this internship in Tenerife is the cherry on top of the cake. They not only gain practical experience in their professional field, but they also enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Tenerife and learn how to live in an unknown environment. This unique experience will make their future careers more successful. They can not only develop their professional skills, but this work placement will also give them different perspectives on responsibility and trust.

We wish them continued success in their internships. We will keep you informed on their progress.

Sunny regards from Tenerife
