PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Romería festival

Traditional Canarian dresses Tenerife

Since the second half of the 17th Century the Romería (pilgrimage) and Baile de Magos (peasant dance) have taken place in La Orotava. The festival is held in honour the patron saints, San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza.

On Friday (June 15th) the dance will be held at 21.00 in the Plaza del Quinto Centenario. The pilgrimage, which in not really a religious procession but a colourful parade of ox carts, musicians and dancers, begins on Sunday (June 17th) at 13.00 in the main streets of the old town. Get there early for the best view.

The dance in La Orotava is very famous. In fact it features in the Guinness Book of Records as it is the largest collection of people wearing traditional costumes in the world. You can hire costumes in the local shops and you won’t be allowed in without one!
