Fencing 2014 – FU Academy Plans EU Funded Sports Project in Tenerife

Last week we said a sad goodbye to our 7 Fencing Project students from the Bristol Academy of sports. Having done a week’s work experience in summer camps, giving training session to children aged 3 – 12, they relaxed at the weekend and went to Loro Park. This is no ordinary zoo – it has the world’s largest collection of parrots and the Foundation is a world leader in animal and bird conservation. They had a great day out and inevitably got soaked at the whale show. Unfortunately their Monday surfing class was cancelled due to the unusual lack of waves but they made up for it at beach volleyball on Friday, competing with other students from the FU Academy.

The day before they left they had a training session and match with Spanish fencers at a private fencing club in Santa Cruz, run by a true veteran, Don Agustín Espinosa García. Although he is over 80 years old he is as agile as someone half his age and they could benefit from his long experience. Inspite of the heat they had a great day there and then it was back to the hotel to complete their log books and pack the bags for the return journey today.

Apart from the very valuable sports and work experience they really appreciated the climate and surroundings in Tenerife and saw another side to the island which is just generally only known as a holiday destination. They will take home many good memories and participation in the Leonardo Project will be an excellent addition to their CV’s. We wish them well in their future sport careers.
